Sand

“Is it sand?” you say.

“Ha! You idiot! It’s…” She trails off, brow scrunching. “Wait, did you say sand?”

“Um, yeah.”

Her lips curls. A low growl rises from her throat as her tail lashes. “F-ine,” she says, sharply enunciating the first syllable. “You’re right. It’s sand.”

“Oh. Good. It was a pretty good riddle, though,” you say, feeling magnanimous in victory. Also, the last thing your really want is a six-foot-tall cat woman with ambiguous powers being pissed off at you.

As you’d hoped, her ears perk up. “Oh?” she says, the winding movement of her tail betraying her interest. “You really think so?”

“Absolutely,” you say. “It had a very poetic quality, in addition to ambiguity. A certain cultural mystique which did very well to match your overall aesthetic. Honestly, I was lucky to get it. And not to toot my own horn, but if anyone else had tried, I’m sure they would have failed.”

She shifts, brushing a paw through the fur behind her ear. “Well,” she says. “I did put a lot of thought into it.”

“It showed. So about the doors…”

“Hm? Oh! Right. Sure.” She points. “The green one will take you to the goblin’s lair. Be careful in there, though. She’s got an absolute mob of the little buggers guarding her.”

“She does?”

“Mhmm. But don’t worry. They’re just goblins.”

“Good to know. Thanks.”

She wiggles her paw in farewell as you move towards the green door at the foot of the tower. You reach for the knob, hesitating a moment. She might be lying… but you kind of doubt it. A sphynx, for all their bloodthirst, are proud creatures above all else. To get their riddle right means they have to acknowledge you.

Still, you can’t help but wince in expectation as you turn the handle, and step through the door.

Fortunately, it seems you were right to trust her. You don’t enter a room so much as a cavern. Raw stone surrounds you in a crudely chiseled tunnel. Torches of bone wrapped in cloth flutter from either side, illuminating the rough cut of the passage, playing shadows against each other and deeper into the subterranean lair.

“Ah,” you say, yanking one of the torches out. “Seems about right.”

You glance back and are far from surprised to see that the doorway has vanished, replaced with nothing more than a flat stone wall. You shrug. Well, you’ve come this far. Even if you wanted to turn back, your committed to this now. Setting your shoulders, torch of bone in hand, you set off down the tunnel and into the tower of the sorceress.
